Year 3 Briefs

Brief 1: Editorial Evolution

Research existing examples of modernist and post-modernist layout design, and use your newfound knowledge to create a suitable layout for a publication. During this task, take into consideration typographic choices, page size and design theory. You should also think about who your target audience will be, and how the publication will be distributed.

Brief 2: Article Research and Production

Research how successful articles are composed and use your improved writing skills to produce a series of articles/interviews to act as the content for your publication, designed in brief one.

Article Title: Individuality in Similarity (The alternate passions of the young modern creative)

Brief 3: Synthesised Photographic Study

To increase your knowledge and skills in photography (a key element in editorial design) through practical work and theoretical reading. you're to produce a conceptual photographic study based on the article that you are writing for the your publication. It could be analogue or digital however you should take into account that the photographs will need to be a minimum of 300Dpi, as they will be printed in your publication. Consider your subjects, compositions and stocks carefully.

Brief 4: Rebrand and Repackage

To diversify your portfolio, you are to choose a company that you either relate to or admire and rebrand them. This should include a new logo, typographical guidelines and house style. Using the new guidelines, choose one product of theirs and repackage the item. Consider the items target market, as well as it’s location in stores. You should also experiment with different materials and production methods.

Brief 5: Creative Networks

In a group of 3 (yourself, Johnathan Dawes and Sarah Coletta). create the event's promotional material for 2 visiting professionals- Daft punk and Andrew Graham Dixon. Research their practice as well as their histories for inspiration. Submit 2 A3 posters in PDF format.

Brief 7: Secret 7 (Live Brief 1)

After last years success having your work exhibited in London, try to build upon this success by entering this year’s Secret 7. Aim to have multiple designs exhibited in the hopes of networking in the creative world.

Brief 8: YCN/D&AD (Live Briefs 2/3)
John Lewis
Fish Packaging?

I have decided not to pursue the photographic studies as I don't feel as though it is relevant to my design practice - If I need photographs I would collaborate with a professional photographer. This is the same reason as to why I will not be learning to code- If I create a website i would have a coder do it for me. I want my time to be spent designing, not coding.

I have also abandoned the article brief, as my career trajectory is now going towards branding and packaging rather than continuing on the editorial track. More branding briefs are more relevant for my practice and will develop my skills much more efficiently.
